From the street, Libertad 57 looks like its neighbours: a whitewashed front, four minutes' walk from the centre of Órgiva. Behind it the house opens up, with a terrace under a wooden pergola looking west over gardens and ten-metre trees, and a rooftop facing the south face of Sierra Nevada and the north face of Sierra Lújar. We restored it keeping its traditional spirit and filled it with vintage furniture and art. It isn't a house made in IKEA.

Desde la calle, Libertad 57 se parece a sus vecinas: una fachada encalada a cuatro minutos a pie del centro de Órgiva. Por detrás, la casa se abre: una terraza bajo una pérgola de madera que mira al oeste, sobre jardines y árboles de diez metros, y una azotea frente a la cara sur de Sierra Nevada y la cara norte de Sierra Lújar. La restauramos manteniendo su espíritu tradicional y la llenamos de muebles antiguos y arte. No es una casa «made in IKEA».

Your own apartment on the ground floor: a bedroom that opens onto a small private patio, a private bathroom, and a sitting room with a full kitchen that looks out over a neighbouring garden and its acequia. White 100% cotton sheets and 600 g/m² towels. Coffee, tea, olive oil and the basics are waiting for you, and in season we leave fruit and olive oil from our own finca.

A private suite on the first floor: a bedroom with an antique iron bed, a sitting room with a writing desk that doubles as a second bedroom, and your own bathroom. The shared kitchen and the pergola terrace are on the same floor. The iron bed is 180 cm long; we kept it for its character, so tall guests should bear that in mind.

Una suite privada en la primera planta: un dormitorio con cama antigua de hierro, una sala con escritorio que sirve también de segundo dormitorio, y baño propio. La cocina compartida y la terraza con pérgola están en la misma planta. La cama de hierro mide 180 cm de largo; la conservamos por su carácter, así que tenlo en cuenta si eres alto.

All three rooms have air-conditioning and heating, a writing desk and a 28 cm memory-foam mattress, and share a bathroom on the same floor. By the stairs to the rooftop there's a sitting area with armchairs and bookshelves, and ink portraits by Juan Antonio hang on the landing.

Las tres habitaciones tienen aire acondicionado y calefacción, mesa de escritorio y colchón viscoelástico de 28 cm, y comparten un baño en la misma planta. Junto a la escalera de la azotea hay una salita con butacas y estanterías, y en el rellano cuelgan retratos a tinta de Juan Antonio.

Double-glazed wooden doors open onto a balcony you can step out on, over a quiet village street, with sun from late morning. Traditional wooden roller shutters, a restored antique wardrobe and vintage furniture. The room is named after the New York poster on its wall, which it shares with a second Rothko print, also from New York.

Persianas tradicionales de madera, armario antiguo restaurado y muebles vintage. Debe su nombre al póster de Nueva York que cuelga en su pared, junto a otra lámina de Rothko también traída de Nueva York.

The window looks west over the gardens and the terrace to the mountains and the valley, and the room fills with warm light in the evening. Vintage furniture, and charcoal drawings by Juan Antonio, one of your hosts.

Wherever you sleep, the rest of the house is yours to share: the kitchen, both terraces, the rooftop and the reading corners. There's also a courtesy toilet on the ground floor, a washing machine, an iron, and a wifi repeater on every floor.

Libertad 57 is also a small collection. There are original works by Marilyn Sica Thompson, an artist friend who lived in Manhattan; charcoals, ink portraits, watercolours and oils by Juan Antonio, one of your hosts; watercolours by other artists; and prints we've brought home from our travels, Delacroix and Rothko among them, starting with the large Rothko that greets you at the entrance, from the Fondation Beyeler in Basel.

Libertad 57 es también una pequeña colección. Hay obra original de Marilyn Sica Thompson, amiga y artista que vivió en Manhattan; carboncillos, retratos a tinta, acuarelas y óleos de Juan Antonio, uno de vuestros anfitriones; acuarelas de otros artistas; y láminas que hemos traído de nuestros viajes, entre ellas Delacroix y Rothko, empezando por el gran Rothko que te recibe en la entrada, de la Fondation Beyeler de Basilea.

Órgiva

The capital of the Alpujarra, with everything you need: health centre, supermarkets and a Thursday market. It's also unusually international, with people from some 60 nationalities, and home to Sufi, Buddhist and yoga communities. You'll hear Spanish, English, French, German, Arabic and Dutch in the street.
